An idea that circulated on social media proposed a link between one of the passengers and the World Economic Forum as the cause behind the sinking of the Titan submersible.

In a June 21 Instagram video, a man commented on the remarkable circumstance of the father and son being stuck in a confined space that is part of an organization which is not well-liked by those in the United States and Canada.

The person mentioned was Shahzada Dawood and his son, Suleman, who were two of the five individuals on the submersible.

A screenshot of a page on the World Economic Forum website detailing Shahzada Dawood was presented by the man.

"It's quite remarkable," the person said, "that he's both part of the World Economic Forum and the vice chairman. What a coincidence that he was stranded at sea to witness the Titanic!"

Meta's campaign against false news and misinformation on its News Feed was the reason for flagging the post. (More information on the partnership can be found here, which covers Facebook and Instagram.) The article was shared before the U.S. Coast Guard officially announced on June 22 that the people aboard the submersible had died.

The World Economic Forum does not have Shahzada Dawood as their vice chairman, something that the Instagram user may have misinterpreted from the webpage.

Engro Corp., a Pakistani holding company that operates in the fertilizer, food, energy and liquefied gas industries, has Dawood as its vice chairman according to the page.

He is absent from the leadership registry of the World Economic Forum.

Engro Corp. is an official partner with the World Economic Forum. As such, it is granted access to WEF's centers for the purpose of networking. The organization is affiliated with the Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Supply Chains, Centre for Energy and Materials, and Centre for Nature and Climate, as acknowledged by the WEF.

According to The New York Times, Shahzada Dawood was a British-Pakistani entrepreneur, belonging to one of the most affluent clans in Pakistan.

Shahzada Dawood is a trustee for two foundations, the Engro Foundation and the Dawood Foundation, and is a director for a multitude of companies. This is according to his profile, which can be found on the Engro website.

The World Economic Forum website has stated that Shahzada is a key figure in the creation of international networks and ties. He is devoted to promoting an enduring future and advocates for the integration of small-scale communities into business models which benefit both parties.

We determine the statement in the Instagram video to be inaccurate.

The way of avoiding plagiarism in writing is to reword the original material, while keeping the same meaning and context intact. This can be done by altering the structure of the text without changing what is being expressed.
